Outdoor Portraiture September 4th 2010

Reception: Wan Fazlin & Shahrizal

Enjoy…

There are many aspiring individuals out there who wonders “how to be a wedding photographer”, or more specifically “how to make some money with wedding photography”. Unfortunately in this country and time, most of the aspiring individuals who wanted to get into the industry mainly thinks about making quick bucks, instead of genuine interest in photography in general. This development is also because of the emerging of competitive DSLR camera prices in the market which makes it affordable to almost everyone who wants a taste of being a pro photographer, as they say. But the photography community cannot do anything about the emergence of a new generation of wedding photographer, be it part time or full time, because it is everybody’s choice to do whatever they wish to do as long as it is within the boundary of human intelligence.

In this article, I am not going to discuss about the issue of part time vs full time photographer nor amateur vs professional photographer, we can save that for another time, but I am here to share some information and tips to these aspiring individuals who aspires to be a wedding photographer in its exact meaning. As you know, wedding photographer like myself usually spent around 4 – 9 hours a day covering an event, mostly alone without any assistant. To explains this alone make me feel exhausted and sometimes afraid because some people could not think how it’s like to work for 9 hours with practically only a few minutes of rest. Because of their lack of thinking on how it feels to work for 9 hours straight, it contributes to the lack of understanding of the client’s needs, the schedule of the event and the poor quality of photographs.

Wedding photography is one of the most challenging photography discipline, because it combines several elements which are sometimes out of our control or rather difficult to control, such as composition (how you position yourself in a packed living room), human emotion, timing (how to anticipate a moment), and some other things that we just cannot do it again if we missed them. Preparation, study and experience helps a lot in order to produce a successful product. So, in order to gain experience, you need to learn from the experienced, that is the rule, and it will always be. You cannot simply shot several weddings of your relatives, being satisfied with it, and claims to be a wedding photographer. It’s just don’t work like that, especially now where the competition are so fierce.

Below, I would like to share with you guys some photography tips that I compiled myself in order to have a successful photography session with your client:

Before the wedding:

  1. Prepare mentally the day before about what and how to shoot.
  2. Be self motivated. You have to motivates yourself and create the excitement about the upcoming assignment.
  3. Make a one final call to the client the day before to make sure that everything is going as planned.
  4. Think the wedding as your own wedding, and how it means to you personally.
  5. Make sure all your equipments are in working condition.
  6. Aspire to shoot the next assignment better than the last one.
  7. Understand the client’s personalities. This helps tremendously on the wedding day when you are having an outdoor photography session.
  8. Study other people works, not because you want to copy them, but to get some inspiration about composition and style.

On the wedding day:

  1. Arrive early. (I usually arrives 15-30 minutes early depending on location)
  2. Walk around the area to look for details, place to stand, lighting condition, etc..
  3. Make sure to test your flash in all the areas in case the lighting conditions differ from one another.
  4. Pre- visualize about what kind of angles you want to shoot or where you want to stand later on.
  5. DO NOT treat the assignment just like ‘another job’. The client pays you good money for your service and you MUST treat them with respect and honor. Besides, they trust on your judgment so repay them to the best of your ability. This is the single most negative factor that I found in some of our photographers. They don’t work hard enough and are itching to go home as early as possible because they have other things to do.
  6. If in the contract you stipulated that for one event the coverage will be 5 hours maximum, don’t tell the client that you’re going to go home once you hit the 5 hour mark. In my practice, if I say that my coverage will be at 5 hours max, usually my coverage will extend to 6 hours, depending on several factors such as the location of the outdoor from the ceremony, intervals (breaks) between merenjis and cake cutting, and so on. But the point is I don’t take the 5 hours I stipulated in the contract literally, instead I take my time to think about the session until both parties are satisfied. Believe me, the client won’t ask for an extra 2-3 hours even if they know you’re not going to charge them. But in case the session went over the stipulated time, tell the client politely that you have to charge for extra hours if you have to.
  7. DO NOT shoot with the same style for every client. Each human being has different personalities that makes them unique in their own way. The essence of a successful photography session is your ability to understand the client’s personalities and to express them into your photographs. I would say that this is probably the biggest factor in determining your success as a photographer.
  8. Think before you shoot. You and the client want quality over quantity.
  9. Be presentable in your appearance and communication. It is vital to be able to communicate with the people around you so they could understand what are your requirements and why you need such thing and so forth.
  10. DO NOT complain about the shortcomings of the location. A good photographer / to produce a good photograph is not about shooting nice and expensive location/items, its about how you make the best out of nothing and impress your client with your ability to see the unseen from the eyes of a normal person.

For me, the item no. 10 is by far the most satisfactory thing a photographer can ask for, to get compliments and impress the client and people around you with your work. In some circumstances, it values higher than money, I kid you not!! Hope you guys learn something from this article and for myself, I am learning with each day’s passing until I have lost my passion for photography, which I hope will not occur in the near future nor forever…

Okay, back to the photos. This was the solemnization ceremony of Wan Fazlin & Shahrizal which were held at Sungai Merab, Kajang in June 2010. Previously I covered her younger sister’s engagement on behalf of  a friend, so this time was the big day for herself . A large crowd were present that day and I had some difficulty in moving around the living area, but at the end of the day, I think I got most of the vital moments in my camera, and that’s all matters to me.

Both are cool, calm and collected person, soft spoken and gentleman to the truest of meaning. I mean they speak about only what is needed and just do whatever I asked them to do, while reminding me of the need to cover some modesty in the pose (haha!), which I duly obliged. Everything went fine as far as the ceremony is concerned, and after the session finished, I went back home, get some rest, and prepare for the next day’s reception ceremony. Hope you enjoy the photos…

Where is the Passion (part 4 of 4)

Working on your own and mixing with like-minded people does open up a whole new experience in terms of how you approach your life and what is actually achievable in life compared to when you’re are working in a company. The possibilities are theoretically unlimited, and it is entirely down to your brain capacity and the hunger to do it. Since I am doing photography as a career now, I think that since wedding does has its seasons, meaning that not many people are getting married  every month in a year, and if they have, some period are so little that you aren’t able to get into the market. So, in a simple way, wedding photographer has their (some) free period where they are able to do other things to generate income.

Such as the case with me, I was an interior designer with 6 years of experience under my belt; I felt that why not I continue to do some small time interior design project since I won’t be doing photography all the time. I can still use my previous experience to look for jobs, while maintaining my knowledge about interior design. I have both skills and knowledge in interior design and photography, why not do both since I am the boss for my own company?

Then at one point, a pattern is slowly emerging. I am starting to feel and look like what I was when I’m working in an interior design company doing part time photography on weekends. This time, it is vice-versa on which one is full-time and part time. But the same situation is arising. I am starting to lose focus a little bit, pressure kicks in, tight schedules are jamming my head, and time management is becoming a major issue. I believe I can handle the jobs smoothly, but that wasn’t the case anymore.

You see, the only reason for me quitting my previous company and do full time is because I can concentrate on one specific subject, which is photography. This enables me to elevate my knowledge and skills to another level because of the time available to me are theoretically unlimited and for more specific reason. It means that all the available time will be used to strengthen my knowledge in photography and contribute to more quality work. So, my decision to do interior design on a part time basis defeats the whole purpose of me resigning from my previous company. I am starting to do 2 jobs at the same time, again!

Then the question came, “What is your passion actually?” For once, I was speechless and went blank for a moment. Usually, these type of questions isn’t for other people to ask me, instead all these while I’m the one demonstrating to the people what my passion really is, and how I do it. But this time I was put to task and I realized that, “it’s better to be an expert in one subject than having skills in 10 subjects but average”.

So, history repeats itself. I am quitting interior design after this final project and I am going to further my knowledge and skills for the real passion which I had since my childhood, photography…

End of part 4…

————-

About this entry, this was an engagement ceremony I covered at Ipoh few weeks ago. Nadiah’s brother hired me because he said my style of photography suits his taste, but I didn’t know it was his sister that is getting engaged at first. Then when I arrived at the place while having breakfast, only I was told that it was Aziz’ sister that is getting engaged, not him..! He never told me when we discussed the rate and schedule so I didn’t bother to ask, because normally the person who make the call is the who is getting married.

But it was nice humor to begin with and I had great time with their families and relatives. In the evening we had a short outdoor session at the classic Ipoh KTM Station with few of Nadiah’s friends, the first time I had a photo shoot there. Anyway congratulations to Nadiah and her new fiance Wan from Gombak for the nice pose, and hopefully to be part of your wedding day as well :D
